Building a Brand: For the Artist with Integrity

…And by “brand,” we mean storytelling.

Tuesday, December 6, 6:30–8:30 p.m. at CUE Art Foundation, 511 West 25th Street, New York, NY

Featuring

• Amy Schroeder, Founder of DIY Business Association

• Kara Szalkowski, Soon-to-be Chief Marketing Officer, DIY Business Association

As an artist, how do you build a brand?

How do artists “brand” themselves without pigeonholing or degrading their practice and integrity?

The answer is telling a good story.

While practicing artists certainly are not traditional companies, they often need to tailor some business savvy to effectively reach their target audiences and elicit interest and support.

The goal of this seminar is to find that balance, and to illuminate many tips and ideas to keep in mind when forming a cohesive marketing agenda.

Participants will learn how to take advantage of print and online tools to reach new audiences, engage prospective collectors and investors, and set themselves apart.

Cost: Free for CUE members, $5 for non-members. You must RSVP to attend this event. Email Jessica.Gildea@cueartfoundation.orgto reserve a seat. View the Facebook Event invitation.

Nope, we won’t be doing body art at these events, but we like this photo of the Tuaca Body Art Ball Evolution tour at CUE Art Foundation in 2009 (photo by the Associated Press that we found on indy.com).

Now What? Getting Your Brand (aka Story) Out There

Tuesday, December 13, 6:30–8:30 p.m. at CUE Art Foundation, 511 West 25th Street, New York, NY

• Alex Miles Younger, E-book Art Director

The follow-up to the December 6 “Building a Brand” event, this seminar will begin with a general overview of branding, followed by an in-depth discussion of current tools and methods for advertising and marketing your work. This will be a great opportunity to gain “industry secrets” and become a marketing pro.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Amy Schroeder is the Founder of the DIY Business Association. Started in early 2011, the DIYBA empowers, educates, and connects artists, entrepreneurs, and creative small businesses to grow their businesses—because it takes a community to do it yourself.

The DIY Business Association is poised for considerable growth in 2012—plans include a national tour of DIYTogether Conferences, a professional matchmaking site called diytogether.biz, a monthly Twitter chat for entrepreneurs (#diychat), an app called Wifi Worker, incredible partnerships, a DIYTogether NYC event, and much more.

Schroeder started her first business, Venus Zine, the magazine about women in music and arts, in her Michigan State University dorm room at age 19. With an initial budget of zero, she recruited a team of writers, editors, photographers, and other creative types to collectively build the publication into a nationally circulated, full-color glossy that’s been applauded in The New York Times, USA Today, and The Chicago Tribune.

Schroeder eventually sold the majority of Venus Zine to an independent Chicago publisher, and continues to speak and educate about her experiences as a community-minded business lady. @diybusiness @amyschroeder

A DIYTogether Group meets at Get Funding ASAP!, a DIY Business Association Micro Conference in September 2011.

He loves the DIY ethic because he believes there’s no better way to learn than through experimentation and experience. Younger started his business in 2007 and hasn’t looked back since. Highlights include launching The Domino Project (a publishing house founded by Seth Godin and Powered by Amazon), and freelancing with Crispin, Porter + Bogusky on photo shoots for Burger King, Coke Zero, Geek Squad, Old Navy, Microsoft, Nike, and Volkswagon. If he never has to light the steering wheel of a car again it will be too soon. Younger was born in a state known for bourbon, horse-racing, and bluegrass music. He believes we should all be more sincerely curious. @unozip
